A QUIET MIND

I went outside this Morning to let the chickens out. The first thing I saw, was chickens ambling all over the yard. Then, I remembered, I forgot to close them up last night. It is just matter of closing their little door to the outside world. The door is just big enough for the chicken to come and go easily. It is big enough for a skunk or racoon. A fox could probably squeeze in. I am not sure of a coyote. It doesn't seem to matter much if one forgets occasionally. Years ago, I experimented with leaving the door open, I discovered it takes awhile for a predator to discover it. In some cases, however, a fox or coyote will patrol the area nightly. Even if the predator couldn't get in the coop, letting chickens out, too early, is not a good idea in this area. The chickens will pop out at first light, and dawn is a very dangerous time. I have lost fowl to great horned owls who haven't retired yet, and coyotes and foxes like to hunt in the hours after dawn. By eight AM it is generally safe to let them out, this time of year.

I finally got my amaryllis and gladiolas planted. It is a little late for the gladiolas. The rule of thumb is that we should plant them before Fourth of July. I have discovered that everything has to be perfect for them to bloom before the first frost if they are planted that late. The blossoms are susceptible to even a light frost. The best thing is to plant them is succession, from late May to the middle of June, then you have a long period of bloom for cut flowers.

Some people don't plant their amaryllis, at all. They can be left in the pots, one can bury the pots leaving the plant undisturbed, or they can be taken out of the pots and planted in the garden. I like the last approach. I assume the plant must enjoy the freedom of being able to spread its roots wherever it wants. The bulbs don't have to be dug up until after a heavy frost. Sometime in early October, I will dig them and put them in the basement. If I want them to bloom for Christmas I will re-pot them around Thanksgiving. However, in the last few years I have discovered it is nice to have them bloom in the dreary days of February, so I re-pot them towards the end of January.

As I was out in the garden yesterday, I was admiring the size of the plants. The potatoes are huge. The lettuce is providing salads and everything looks good; including the weeds. The weeds love the week, on either side of the solstice, to show their stuff, and they do. Folks who have the most weed free gardens, in the neighborhood, struggle to keep up.

I am sitting here, very peaceful, enjoying a superb Morning on planet Earth. The world of chaos is very far away. A perfect world, created by love, is in my mind; it is all I can see. If I don't read the paper, or turn on a radio or TV, I won't even know that other world exist. Does it? What if all of us had a perfect world in our mind? Would we out-picture it? Isn't that how we create?

It isn't difficult for me to experience a perfect world. I can just look at this screen, in front of me, and watch the words appear. My mind is Peace. My mind is Love. This moment is perfect. Why can't it last forever? I think it can; so far it hasn't. A moment from now, I may latch onto a stray thought that takes me out of this peaceful place.

We have all experienced this peace. When we are absorbed in something we love to do, whether it be painting, writing, gardening, sculpting, carpentry, etc. Our minds can find this quiet place where everything is perfect. We can even experience it when we are doing mundane tasks like the dishes. Love can be both hands in the soapy water.

When we are into that peaceful place, in our minds, we extend that peace to all other minds. That is how we bring peace to the world. Let us all find that peaceful place and bring peace to the world. The world is awash in Love. It is available to all of us. We are like magnifying lens, when we let the love flow through, us unimpeded, it multiplies many times.

Love in Peace,  Gregg
