Happiness is our natural state. When we remove all the dreck from our consciousness, we are happy. When we are in the present, without apprehension of the future or regret of the past, we are happy. We don't need to ask ourselves if we are happy and we don't need to do anything to make us happy. Happiness is. If we don't experience happiness, we are weighing ourselves down with thoughts or feelings that belong to the illusion. Those thoughts and feelings do not belong in our mind, they belong in the past to be let go or a future that does not exist.
Our spiritual/psychological mentors have long postulated that happiness is a decision. That sometimes has annoyed us; after all what do they know about what we have to deal with? Yet you live long enough on planet Earth and you realize they are right. We discover that we can make ourselves miserable at the drop of a hat. Likewise, sometimes, we are up to our eyeballs with dreck and we decide to chuck it all and be happy.
We bring ourselves to the present moment and we see beauty around us. Perhaps it is a sunshiny day or maybe it is a wondrously rainy day. Whether it be cloudy or bright, we experience it as marvelous. Everything is marvelous and it is so great to be alive.
Today, when I got up, the Sun was still below the horizon but it was light. As I sat there, sipping my coffee and doing the crossword puzzle, the Sun arose and beams of light streamed in the window. The golden light of Morning made everything in the room breathtakingly beautiful.
Sometimes I might not have seen it. I might have focused on the single digit cold and the fact that I had to go outside soon and take care of the animals. I could have missed the beauty that surrounded me. I could have started the day as a blah me, rather than a glorious me.
Yes, happiness is our decision! However, our egos have made us addicts. We are addicted to negative thoughts of the past and future. We can give up our addiction to unhappiness. We don't need to regret the past or fear the future.
We need to take one day at a time. We don't have to wait until another Morning. We can begin right now. Let us bring our minds to the present moment; empty them of all past and future thoughts. Let the love and beauty of the world emerge around us.
Let us begin every Morning with the decision to be happy. As the day progresses, let us remind ourselves that happiness is our underpinnings, it is our foundation. No life experience or happening needs to keep us from this basic awareness.
We have had enough experience now to know that happiness raises the consciousness of all around us.
There is no past. The future doesn't exist. There is now and it is brimming over with happiness.
Love and Peace, Gregg
