Years ago, in my role as a Family Therapist, I did a fair amount of chemical dependency counseling. Some of my clients refused to go to AA because they rejected the religious over tones of a higher power. As an agnostic myself, at the time, it was easy for me to understand their dilemma. I appreciated, and I helped them appreciate, the success AA had with this concept. I have always believed that people at their heart were loving and decent. It seemed like I was born with that belief and it didn't matter what my ideas of God were, I 'knew' people at their heart were good. Perhaps it was what led me in into the practice of psychotherapy, because I believed everything negative, about us humans, was an overlay learned from experience. If we could learn it, we could unlearn it with the right guidance.
My recall is not perfect, but I believe I was able to get my clients to see the higher power as their own center; a part of them that remained unchanged by their experience. I don't know if I articulated it at the time, but I thought of that center as love.
I am sure the readers of my blog note that I always use the word Source or perhaps Creator. I don't use the word God. I do that because the word God has been contaminated by years of exploitation by religion. Millions and millions of people have been killed, tortured, and deprived of their property in the name of somebodies god.
Some of the most loving and spiritual people I know still cannot accept the concept of God because they look around them and see the damage religion has wrought. Personally, I have long since gotten over this dilemma. The word god for me does not bring to mind the horror of religion but I fully understand why others still shun the word.
Of course, I have, also, known very spiritual people who were deeply religious. There are many, many folks who have never bought into the negative aspects of their religion. When we know God is Love, the rest doesn't matter.
We don't have to make problem where none need exist. Is it hard to accept that we don't really know much? We create this illusion with our thoughts and feelings. We know the illusion responds to our input. When we love we see love. When we send out love, love returns. Learning how this works is not an intellectual process. It is experiential. We try it; it works. As smiles are reflected, love comes back to us. Isn't it obvious that love creates everything we want and fear creates everything we don't want?
It isn't difficult to be convinced that love is everything and that is all that we need to know.
We can look at it and conclude that everything is energy; our bodies and everything we see. Matter, including our bodies, is only a dense form of energy. It is just slowed down. We continue to shape energy into matter with our minds, because we are creators, part of Source. All energy is Love. Source is Love. When we create with Source, we create only love. As we are part of source, we are free will beings. We wanted to experience what it would be like to create without Source. With the separation, fear entered in. As we went on, our creation became heavily contaminated with fear. Thus, came all the negativity of the old world.
We are now extricating ourselves from the world we made with fear. We may not see much evidence of it yet, but we soon will. It doesn't matter if we are religious, have no religion or reject any idea of religion. The truth stands outside of anything we could believe. We can know by experiencing. Try Love. See everything as Love. See only Love. Let us see how it works for us.
Love and Peace, Gregg
